"Build a Better World" is this summer's reading club theme. We've planned a line-up of creative events that involve construction activities.

People who sign up can “Build a Better World” when summer reading club kicks off on Wednesday, May 31, at the Hancock County Public Library.

Between 4 and 7 p.m. in Greenfield, Home Depot will be on hand with crafts for kids to build and take home. The Greenfield Fire Dept. is parking its fire truck out front for kids to tour, and they can visit the Greenfield Police Department's DARE vehicle nearby.

Hungry families have the option of purchasing dinner from the Wild Boar BBQ food truck.

Inside, kids are invited to read to service dogs from Bentley's Buddies & Friends and leave with a free frozen treat. It's an opportunity to sign up for the reading club using library computers and check out a stack of books. When children read for twenty minutes and log their time online, they'll receive incentives as time accumulates, including entries in grand prize drawings.

Hancock County residents of all ages may join the summer reading club from home at hcplibrary.org. Teens and adults have their own clubs, earning an entry in prize drawings for each book they read and log online.

Sign-up for free children’s events opens this day. Sign-up for teen and adult events is open now.

Reader dogs from "Bentley's Buddies and Friends" will share stories with children (4-7 p.m.) in our GBC Community Room. We'll have computers set up for easy summer reading club sign-up with staff ready to assist.

Stop by our free Popsicle table and pick up a summer event guide.

Sign up early for the Kids Summer Reading Club!

The program (and entering time on your reading record) will officially begin Wednesday, May 31.
Important Messages
Parents, our summer reading program for kids now counts time. Research shows that children reading 20 minutes a day maintain their reading skills over the summer. We want to help your children continue to succeed in school and life.

Kids Summer Reading Club Guidelines

Sign Up for the Kids Summer Reading Club by clicking the “Sign Me Up” button. The Kids Summer Reading Club is for babies up to students entering grade 5 in the fall. Looking for the Adult and Teen clubs? Click the tabs above (or the Home button on mobile).

Read 20 minutes each day, then log your time by logging into your account and selecting Add/View Log. Need help? Ask at the Children’s Desk.

Earn Prizes for reaching reading milestones:
  1. Read 1 hour (60 minutes): Raid our prize stash! Choose one free small toy from the Children's Desk.

  2. Read 5 hours (300 minutes): pick out a free paperback book from our book cart.

  3. Read 10 hours (600 minutes): receive a packet of coupons for free food and treats from local businesses.

  4. Read 15 hours (900 minutes): choose a free class, activity, or experience from a local business.

  5. All reading prizes must be earned and picked up by Tuesday, August 1 at 9:00 PM.

Keep Reading books all summer long for more prizes! Every 20 minutes read gains one entry into our Grand Prize Drawings. The more you read, the greater your chances. The drawing takes place after August 1, and the winners will be notified. All Grand Prizes must be picked up by Thursday, August 10 at 9:00 PM.
