Jesse Keljo will discuss Jill Bolte Taylor's book, MY STROKE OF INSIGHT: A BRAIN SCIENTIST'S PERSONAL JOURNEY.

Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: she had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions-- motion, speech, self-awareness--shut down one by one. The scientist in Taylor alternated between the euphoria of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace, and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized she was having a stroke and enabled her to seek help before she was completely lost. It would take her eight years to fully recover.

Participants are not required to read the selection in advance.

Important Messages
Celebrate Markus Zusak’s novel, The Book Thief, during the Hancock County Public Library’s “Winter Book Fest,” February 1-28. Zusak’s story, about the ability of books to feed the soul, takes place in Nazi Germany during WWII.

To participate, simply sign up above. Then each time you complete an activity below, fill out a paper slip and enter it in a prize drawing at the library’s information desk. Write down, briefly, the activity you completed on the back.

It’s that easy. (You may also opt to join the “Get Caught Reading” winter reading club with your family.) Prizes are three weekly drawings for restaurant gift cards and a fourth grand prize drawing for an Indiana State Park pass.

Each completed activity below qualifies you for an entry slip
(one entry for each activity except where indicated):

  1. Read The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. Get copies of the book from special displays at either library location.

  2. Attend a library event in February. We're hosting a series related to the book (multiple entries permitted).

  3. Watch a movie or ducomentary that is set in the same era as The Book thief (WWII). You may check out a library DVD or BluRay disc, or use HOOPLA to stream a movie through your computer or download to your mobile device.

  4. Zusak’s protagonist, Liesel, loves books but can’t afford to buy them. Donate a gently-used book to charity by dropping it off in marked boxes at the library.

  5. Liesel shares books with neighbors. If you own a copy of The Book Thief, lend it to a friend.

  6. Read one of the books related to WWII from a special display at the library. Or choose a book from the “Winter Book Fest Reading List” in the adult area (multiple entries permitted).

  7. Create a work of art based on The Book Thief, and drop it off at the library for display.

  8. Zusak’s book centers on kindness in unexpected places. Perform one hour of community service for a non-profit organization in Hancock County.

  9. Post a photo of someone reading The Book Thief on your Facebook page, and tag the “Hancock County Public Library.” Please mark the post "public."

  10. Join our "Winter Book Fest" event on Facebook to earn one entry. Earn another entry each time you post a book review of The Book Thief, of a book from our WWII display, or of a book from the "Winter Book Fest Reading List." (Multiple entries permitted.)
